Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt Cheats?

Usain Bolt is a Jamaican sprinter who holds world and Olympic records in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, with times of 9.69 seconds and 19.30 seconds, respectively. He is the first man in history to break both world records at one Olympics, and the first man to win both the 100 and 200 meters events at the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984. His name and achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname “Lightning Bolt”.

Such dominate performance is cause for some to speculate about possible cheating by Usain Bolt. Bolt has denied taking performance-enhancing drugs and has not failed a drug test. Yet, his coach acknowledges, it will be impossible for Bolt to avoid skepticism given the sport’s clouded history. A number of Olympic champions, world champions and record holders have been stripped of their sprint medals, records and reputations, including Ben Johnson, Marion Jones, Justin Gatlin, Tim Montgomery and Kelli White.

Usain Bolt CHEATed in the Olympics
Chester Cheater

Usain Bolt competes for Jamaica, a country without a random drug testing policy. Drug tests are scheduled in advance and separated by months. This explains Usain Bolt’s superman like performances. Recently interviewed by Sports Illustrated, Carl Lewis had this to say about Bolt, “When people ask me about Bolt I say he could be the greatest athlete of all-time. But for someone to run 10.03 one year and 9.69 the next, if you don’t question that in a sport that has the reputation it has right now, you’re a fool. Period.” It sounds like one of the greatest athletes of all time is skeptical of Bolt’s performance. Lewis questions the Jamaican sprinting program in general, including the women, “Veronica Campbell-Brown lives in the United States and has been transparent and consistent. She won the worlds last year in the 100 meters and this year can’t even make the (Jamaican) team. Are you going to tell me that shouldn’t be questioned?” Lewis goes on to say, “People forget that I was the first one to speak out about Ben [Johnson], and I got crucified. A year later, I was a prophet. The athletes have to say, ‘No, this isn’t right.’ They know who’s on it. They need to step up.” Carl Lewis knows track and sprinting better than anyone, if he doesn’t trust it, neither should you.

Usain Bolt BEAT his competition in the Olympics
Billy Beater

Usain Bolt is a modern marvel of sports. He has set world records, and has raised the bar in the sport of sprinting. He has done so legally and cleanly. He has repeatedly been tested, including during the Olympics and he has come up clean every time. Bolt is 6′5″ and built for speed. His long stride allows him to cover more ground than his competitors, which gives him an advantage. It is similar to the physical advantages that Michael Phelps has. These advantages are natural, and not part of a doping regimen. The Jamaican Observer has an entire list of reasons that Usain Bolt and other Jamaican sprinters run fast, and none of them include cheating. Usain Bolt beat his competitors in the Olympics and is an International hero.

So what do you think, did Usain Bolt CHEAT, or did he BEAT his competitors?

All jamaican’s cheat. They smoke the weed.

    jerryb Says:

No proof yet, but he is winning too easily, they’ll figure out how eventually. I will go on record now saying he is cheating somehow.

    Phil Says:

Every time I watch those replays, I really have to wonder. He is so far ahead of the rest of the field, it is truly unbelievable. He beats the world records, and it barely even looks like he is trying.

    Anonymous Says:

From what I understand, Jamaica doesn’t have any type of testing. So Bolt has been allowed to do whatever during his training period. Now they tested him at the Olympics, but as long as he was able to make his system clean in time, it didn’t matter what he did in order to get his body into this dominating state in the past. It is like the Dominican baseball players who would go home during the off season and dope up. Then they would come back to the U.S. and stop taking the drugs long enough to test clean.

    rushshady Says:

to that idot who stated that Jamaica has no type of testing is crap.. Jamaica opened its doors to the WADA in 2005 and has strict laws against anyone found doping, cheating or whatever you want to call it…http://www.stuff.co.nz/4668124a27896.html check that out and think if it was an American all of America would have said how brilliant he is,.. y cant u jus give him the benefit of the doubt…y is it guilty untill u r proven innocent with u guys and not innocent until u r proven guilty

  6. 6
    kelsos Says:

Now dig this,When johnson broke the 200m record it was brilliant. And he did this in a time when some drugs where not even discovered. Anyway jamaicans are tested very often ever since asafa powell. it is not in the culture of jamaicans to take drugs. We don’t even research that shit. that is an american thing. Jamaicans just know how to work hard and study hard.

    Phil Says:

Not in the culture of Jamaicans to take drugs? ROFL

    Rick Says:

Jamaicans are known for their bob marley mahn. His legs are definitely long and should give him an advantage due to longer strides, but for a guy that never competed in the 100m and suddenly win it while pounding his chest….. Come on, he was probably doping for a few months to get bigger/faster, but then stopped. Once he got to the olympics, it was just a matter of coasting.

  9. 9
    Rick Says:

Another thought - maybe he got a shot of adrenaline before each run…that’s not illegal is it?

    john Says:

Persons like Carl Lewis has no moral authority to question Bolt.He was found guilty of using drugs during his career. He and others should also inform themselves before speaking crap about drug testing in Jamaica. The national drug testing body is not in operation now but WADA and the IAAF,do conduct tests including random tests on Jamaicans both locally and abroad as they appear without notice at meets and training sessions or other places.Carl Lewis is simply exhibiting his usual attitude of badmindedness.Did he ever express scepticism about Flo Jo and Marion Jones?

  11. 11
    john Says:

Here’s the real problem with Lewis:

“SI.com: I was surprised to read IAAF President Lamine Diack recently say that Bolt winning three gold medals in Beijing was more impressive than you winning four in 1984 because he broke three world records and you only broke one with the relay team. Did you see that?

Lewis: Yes, and I sent him an e-mail. For him to make that judgment is wrong. He should talk about Usain on his own merits. Secondly, I said one of the problems in our sport is there is such an emphasis on records and here you are, the president of the federation, talking about records. The sport should be about competition.

You can compare us as sprinters, but the thing I am most proud of is that I did multiple events and I long-jumped. There is not a sprinter on the face of this Earth that can long-jump. I tell people all the time that I wasn’t a sprinter that long-jumped, I was a long-jumper that sprinted, and that’s a fact.”

    Adisa Says:

well thats the real problem with lewis @ john I read that too but its not only lewis that have a problem its the entire US that does, according to them oh dare a small poor island with 3 million people out perform them in track and field and do it in fine style. dancing and all guess what it doesnt stop there bolt will be around in 2012 and several more Jamaicans so it will be headache for america again

People need to stop hating on Bolt and quit talking out of their asses about the achievements of the phenomenal young man! Bolt has been setting and breaking records since he was 14 years old and as for the idiots who are critisising Jamaica’s drug testing methods - do some research and stop repeating uncorroborated stories!!! Jamaica Anti-Doping Unit (JADU) is responsible for testing all athletes and prior to Beijing one of our athletes was pulled because he TESTED positive for a banned substance!! TESTED stupid people, it tests were NOT done here, how would that have been discovered? Carl Lewis is a typical American jealous jerk. He’s washed up and just hate to see other nations in the spotlight. His comment about being a “prophet” as it relates to Ben Johnson is laughable, ESPECIALLY since his prophetic gift didn’t detect the cheats from his own country - selective phophecy, perhaps? Anyway, it’s better to be envied than to be pitied so keep the hate going; it acts as motivation for us!!

    tony Says:

if bolt is on roids, so is every american who has even won gold in track and field history since the invention of steroids. as a matter of fact, they should just ban the usa from track and field all together for the outrageous past use of steroids.

    Phil Says:

LOL. Such venom from the island of Jamaica. I thought you were supposed to be “mellow” down there.

  17. 17
    Marcia Says:

Carl Lewis is Jealous, he thinks Usain is taking drugs probably because fe cant imagine how he took the drugs and still was not able to run as fast or brake the records.

Well he did it Carl Lewis and anyone else with doubts so deal with it…

  18. 18
    Vik Says:

Bolt is sick! He’s clean, except for some ‘dro.

  19. 19
    SteroidN Says:

Considering 3 of the past world record holders in the 100M have drug-cheated there is reason to suspect anyone holding that record. It seems we have lost all perspective of a world record. Jesse Owens ran a 10.2(and timed) in the Berlin Olympics with the Nazis staring down on him. Can a young athlete today beat Jesse Owens by over 1/2 second in a 100M race?

Shoes, tracks, and training have improved. However who would win if Jesse Owens, Bob Hayes, and Carl Lewis line up against Bolt and 3 more elite sprinters of today? Do we really think the greatest sprinter of modern times — Owens — would lose to Powell, Gay, Dix, and Bolt? Not a chance.

The difference has to be something besides blocks and better spikes.

  20. 20
    Jeffm Says:

Carl Lewis is now an irrelevant old fart and his comments are laced with with jealous and hate. We all know HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR BANNED SUBSTANCES and he does not have any platform to spew such venom. If the US drug testing system was so efficient, why then do we the Marion Jones,Tim Montgomery of this world? Then theres Gatlin…and Carl Lewis himself. WTF? As long as Bolt has never tested positive, he is innocent…and until someone explains WHY IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO DO WHAT HE DID without taking roids, then theres no story here. Carl, please, just shut the hell up!

  21. 21
    SNation Says:

    Jeffm:

    1. Justin Gatlin did test positive. Twice. (one for a stimulant which he did not have a TUE; once for testosterone).

    2. As you know a systematic effort to overcome testing can beat the system (ala Jones, and Montgomery) if the tests are predictable or sloppy.

Thus your post supports the argument for random out of season dope testing.

    3. Calling Carl Lewis names does not add power to your argument, it simply adds a lack of respect.

Again, Jamaicans need to stop throwing up smoke screens, and start complying with state of the art testing.

  22. 22
    JeffM Says:

    SNation:

    1. Yes Justin Gatlin tested positive.Twice and he’s American

2.Again those you mention are Americans who made it to the Olympics even with the “superior” US off-season random testing , right?

3.You completely missed the point.Calling names never add power to arguments.I’m surprised you actually would think that anyone would attempt to do that :).Carl Lewis deserved to be called names , because he showed disrespect first, especially knowing he himself did test positive. He should be congratulating Bolt instead of spewing venom and trying to steal the limelight from someone who has achieved what he Carl Lewis will NEVER achieve.

What state of the art testing does the US have if it could let the likes of Marion Jones and Gatlin go as far as being called “Olympic Champions” and yet they were doping all along. Please…

Bolt is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.Isn’t that what American democracy advocates?

  23. 23
    john Says:

JeffM is so right about the “state of the art” testing in the USA.While SNation continues to live in ignorance about the testing that Jamaican athletes are subjected to.In case he did not follow the link in my post above,Bolt said he was tested out of competition so many times he has lost count. He and the other Jamaican athletes are being tested in and out of competition.Get off the myth that they are not.

Also just found out Carl improved from 10.67 in 1979 to 10.21 in 1980.That is even a greater improvement than Bolt’s 10.03 to 9.69.Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

  24. 24
    Rodman Says:

They caught that guy Bukley right before the Olympics started, Sports Illustrated did the article linking the purchase of substances to other athletes on the team.

  25. 25
    Jack P. Says:

Carl Lewis is one of the best track and field athletes to ever compete. He knows what is going on in the sport, and has always known what has gone on around him. He is the only one with the guts to speak up and ask the question. I applaud him for doubting Bolt. He is just saying what everyone else is thinking. Usain Bolt is a cocky show boat on the track, and he is crooked off of it. He cheats just like the rest of his teammates.

  26. 26
    Victor Conte was right! Says:

    From http://www.theage.com.au

VICTOR Conte, the jailed mastermind of the Balco drugs scandal in the US, says he warned the World Anti-Doping Agency about a drugs supplier working with elite athletes and suggested eight months ago sending disguised drug testers to Jamaica.

The International Olympic Committee has not released test results from the track and field program, but samples from the opening night’s competition, including those of Jamaican 100 metres champion Usain Bolt, were expected soon. Bolt has been drug tested seven times since arriving in Beijing, the Jamaican team doctor, Herb Elliott, has said.

Conte said he had no evidence of doping by any of the winners but noted that when sprint times “begin falling like rain, questions arise”. He said this was especially so when the record breakers came from Caribbean nations such as Jamaica where there was no independent anti-doping agency.

Conte said Bolt’s 100 metres in 9.69 seconds was almost unbelievable. He said the time of the women’s 100 metres champion Shelly-Ann Fraser — a blazing 10.78 seconds — was an improvement of more than half a second in a year. “I have no knowledge that these individuals were involved in wrongdoing. All I know is that they and other athletes come from regions where minimal off-season testing is administered,” he said.

Conte wrote in the New York Daily News that former head of WADA Dick Pound stepped down weeks after being tipped off, including being given the drug supplier’s name, phone number and contacts. Pound was replaced by Australia’s John Fahey. Conte said those in WADA who conducted investigations and drug testing had not acted on the tip-off.

He said there was no routine off-season testing from October to January, when cheating athletes use steroids in combination with intensive weight training. Testing at major competitions and between grand prix meetings was ineffective.

Fahey had said on the eve of the Games it was critical that 100 metres winners were clean to preserve the integrity of the sport. He said Conte’s comments lacked credibility because he was a convicted criminal charged with distributing drugs.

after reading his the cheater article as a jamaica who has been seeing the progression on usain bolt from he was 15 at our boys and girls champs in jamaica i have been forced to conclude that lewis and your logics is nonesence. at 16 this young man ran 20.28 in a 200 and 45.13 in a 400 meters all without any competition. at 17 he became the fastest ever junior and at 19 after a year of injury became the fastest ever jamaican at 200 at 19.79.are we saying that this young man is taking drugs from he is 16 look at the progression.

in the 100 he did not start running this event competitively until this year.he ran 10.03 on a grass track hand timed.which any track athelete knows is severly skewed.his follow up race on the fast track at kingston was 9.76 so really his first competitive 100 meters was in fact that time and he did it easily once again with no competition.so 9.69 easily with his 41 strides which he needs is nothing.

on the subject of carl lewis though in 1988 he was cleared of a positive test sample by the US olympic association we tend to forget that when we discuss him.so really do u trust him enough to let him pass judgement on on anyone. he who kept his mouth shut when flo jo and marion jones and gatlin where killing the track with drugs.why didnt he speak out then. oh thats right they were americans.leave MR bolt alone and let him progress naturally. as he has been

    Bob Says:

According to Wikipedia, “The official language of Jamaica is English.” So what happened? Of course Wikipedia also states this, “The Jamaica national bobsled team was once a serious contender in the Winter Olympics.” So maybe it isn’t the most reliable source?

  29. 29
    Illumaster Says:

Right I just want you to think about this, I am not implying he is cheating this is just a question I am asking to you all.

Ben Johnson only ran 9.79 seconds (Johnson)=Cheat, he was using Steroids for over 7 years during his career so he was pumped up on drugs to the max yet could only run 9.79? Usain bolt comes along running 9.69 effortlessly a huge drop in time, No drugs and clean. Could you honestly tell me that it is possible that for an athlete to cheat for 7 years on performance ENHANCING drugs (Virtually a man with rockets on his feet) Vs a man with just natural ability, that a natural guy could win?

Its only a question I’m not pointing fingers its just understandable why people would be questioning him.

Also Usain bolts coach says Bolt doesn’t take any supplementation and doesn’t even dare take Vitamin C tablets….Hmmm thats hard to believe If you wanted the best out of you Legally

    Chester_Cheater Says:

So what are the Jamaicans going to say on Sunday is Usain Bolt’s name comes out among the Olympians to be Disqualified? When the IOC meets tomorrow to discuss additional testing, if Usain Bolt’s name is there, will Jamaicans say he was set up, or will you admit your hero is a cheater?

  31. 31
    cwl Says:

first off, Usain is not 22 years old. he didn’t win the world juniors at age 15. he lied about his age because he felt he wouldn’t be picked up on the dole . this is fact and has been published. no flames. he never competed as an under 20 illegally so its all a wash.

second, the sprint game is like stock car racing. if you aren’t cheating then you aren’t trying. if sports illustrated goes after him, they will get him. let sleeping dog lye.

  32. 32
    tambie Says:

America cant tolerate another nation more important than they are and just like everything else believe they should not be beaten at anything, Carl Lewis is sour grapes, Carl Lewis , zeros in on Usain Bolt, and ignores the records set by other athletes are they not on steroids too? Usain has drawn a line through Carls Name, and stands supreme as he will until if and when he defeats himself as no one else can and will do so, Go Jamaica..love u all including Carl…do grow up and give appreciation and praise where its due just like you had it when you were on top of the world Bolt will do sub 9.50 before long

  33. 33
    Phil Says:

First of all, Jamaica is not “more important” than the United States. Your country won a few sprints, that doesn’t make it important.

Secondly, Carl Lewis “zeros in on Usain Bolt” because he was specifically asked questions by an interviewer about Bolt. “SI.com: It’s been few weeks since the Games; what do you think of Usain Bolt?” If he had been asked, “What do you think about Polish Sausage”, then Poland would be upset about being singled out.

  34. 34
    Vo Says:

Carl is not even worth the time. He is just pist that American’s can’t cheat no more, and now it’s the Jamaican’s time to shine. Bolt took his record, and he is bitching about it.

Yes Jamaican’s are “more important” than the USA, We have the world “fastest” man. Its only a few sprints, but it’s the most imporant sprints, of all sprints. He need to know that he wasn’t going to be on top for ever.

  35. 35
    Snation Says:

Is is true the IAAF implemented random drug testing in Jamaica…so that helps.

Lewis wasn’t saying Bolt uses drugs, he simply questioned the testing protocol.

And yes, Lewis tends to pop off.

BTW, Carl Lewis is 6-2 or 6-3. Bolt is 6-4. Are these the two tallest sprinters in history?

  36. 36
    O'Neil Says:

You guys are all fools who say Jamaica does not have any drug testing policy.
    1. Rep’s from the world body perform periodic tests on our athletes.

    2. There is only one major athletic event in Jamaica (National Trials) all the others are on Grand Prix circuits and US college meets where drug testing is always done. Our professional athletes are always tested.

    3. Carl Lewis has tested positive 1, 2, 3 times in the eighties. Who talks about that. BALCO started in the early eighties and none of those (mostly USA)guys got caught. You are all hypocrites who questions a kid who has run under 20s since he was 15 years old. CArl Lewis , Marion Jones, Justin Gatlin… Most of your outstanding athletes cheat (Proven). The ones who did not get to cheat this year did not perform well. (Fact)

  37. 37
    Mallin Says:

They should hold a competition between usain and carl with drugs allowed and see who beats who

  38. 38
    Rosa Says:

English is the language of Jamaica and we have our local dialect:patois. In the same way that english is the language of the U.S.A and they have their local dialect: american.

As for doping, it is obvious to everyone that Americans did
badly in sprints at the Olympics because they were unable to take their “VITAMINS” with the exception of Phelps of course. Did the prophet Carl Lewis call that out? What of Fo-Jo didn’t he see that to make a call on it considering he appointed himself “whistle-blower”.

    Jamaica athletes tested often - F e n n e l l
    published: Thursday | April 24, 2008
    Leighton Levy, Jamaica Gleaner Writer

THE PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), Mike Fennell, wants the world to know that Jamaican track and field athletes, especially its top athletes, are tested for drugs often, very often.

The JOA president was reacting to comments being made in recent times by critics of Jamaica’s athletes and the authorities governing the sport, who say tests are not conducted as often as they should be because the country does not have its own independent drug authority.

“It has been said by some misguided people that Jamaican athletes are not being tested because we don’t have a national (drug-testing) programme,” Fennell said. “What the world needs to know is that for some years now, not just recently, all our top athletes have been under an out-of-competition testing programme as organised by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) and we have several athletes that are tested continuously every year,” he said.

    Banned

Those ‘misguided’ people to whom Fennell refers would include Victor Conte, who was jailed for providing some of the biggest names in track and field from the United States with performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Among the athletes who were subsequently banned from the sport after they were supplied PEDs by Conte were former world-record holder Tim Montgomery and his former girlfriend Marion Jones, who won five medals, including three gold, at the Sydney Games in 2000. Jones is currently serving a six-month prison term for lying to federal prosecutors about her drug use.

Conte, in an interview aired on the CNN Newsroom on December 13, 2007, suggested that the reason some athletes were not being caught was that the countries they represented did not have independent drug-testing programmes and as such, were not subjected to out-of-competition testing.

“In 2004, at the Olympic Games, there were 208 countries that participated,” Conte said. “Only 24 of those countries had their own independent anti-doping federations in place. That meant that the other 180-some odd countries, while they were training on home soil … and I am talking about countries like the Ukraine, and The Bahamas and Jamaica … and Trinidad, they have no testing federation.”

But, according to the JOA president, people like Conte and former Olympic champion Carl Lewis, who has, without calling names, suggested publicly that Jamaica’s Asafa Powell was using PEDs, are misinformed.

“I want it to be made known far and wide that Jamaican athletes are under constant observation and are being tested,” he said.

He said that last year, Jamaican athletes were tested and tested often.

    Numerous tests

“Our athletes were tested many times, in particular those of our athletes that are at the very top,” Fennell revealed. “Our world-record holder (Powell) was tested numerous times in 2007 and this is being done through the international programme of the IAAF, together with the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA).”

The test samples, he said, are taken under special conditions and sent to the testing lab in Montreal.

And it does not stop there. Testing could become more rigorous, once teams are selected and the entries submitted for the Summer Games in Beijing.

“Furthermore,” Fennell said, “under the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Games (in China) and agreed to by their medical commission and in accordance with the WADA’s terms and conditions, all the athletes, once the final entries are in, are exposed to being selected for testing. Entries go in in July and once that is done, we have to be able to tell the whereabouts of any of these athletes. If selected (for testing) and they are not able to be found, the athletes will find themselves in trouble,” the JOA chief concluded.<

    Tammy Says:

Do not listen to the uninformed ramblings of cwl (31). Usain Bolt IS 22 yrs old. He won the World Junior Champs 200m in 2002, which by the way took place in Jamaica, when he was 15 years old (the youngest to do so). He was racing against 18 and 19 yo then just like he is racing agains older competitors now. How do I know? I was there and I saw it for myself. He didn’t have a reason to lie then and he doesn’t now. The guy is gifted PERIOD.

Carl Lewis - I have respect for his acheivements in his time but I have lost respect for him as a person. He made no attempt to get his facts straight before shooting off his flipping mouth about anti-drug testing in Jamaica. His comments/accusations border on SLANDER. Read the above article from the Jamaica Gleaner written prior to the Beijing Olympics and prior to Usain’s world record in NYC Reebock GrandPrix. Furthermore, Lewis is trying to say that Veronica Campbell-Brown did not make the 100m in the JA trials because she trains in the US and the other girls who train in JA were doping. They won by the narrowest margins. So what? When Merlene Ottey last ran for Jamaica in Athens you think she ran because she qualified. No, she, a champion in her event, was beaten fair and square by younger and fitter runners, who unlike herself trained in JA. The margin of defeat was convincing but she was allowed to compete in a faster runner’s place as a gester of respect … seeing that it would’ve been her last olympics. If Veronica Campbell-Brown did compete who knows maybe the Jamaican sweep of the Women’s 100m would not have happened.

My point is that when you have a country that churns out champions after champion it’s not a surprise that when you have new champions emerging. Look at Asafa and Usain.

Go to http://www.iaaf.org and search “usain bolt 2002″ and look at pics of him from the 2002 World Junior Champs. Same posturing reminiscent of the Beijing Olympic after crossing the line. Eerie isn’t it!

I have worked for united kingdom athletics for many year in physiotherapy departments and in rehabilitation, so from a person with inside knowledge and experience ,who is close friends with athletes all i have to say is this. If you want to compete at a professional level illegal supplementary help is needed.without a doubt.
For Usain Bolt to cut his time by 0.50 in a year speaks volumes. Hes a very charming guy and its amazing to see someone break so many records in front of your eyes.people naturally stand up for him but your all in denial if you think its all down to natural ability.
Jamaica’s testing policies have always been dodgy. Even when they carry out off-season random testing it is still governed by Jamaica its self. You have to remember Jamaica is a still very corrupt country.
Many renowned athletes have taken steroids for decades who already possess natural ability and have still never reached the times usain has reached. Natural ability can not compensate for these ridiculously fast time and constant record breaking.

DH that may be true for the UK but if Jamaicans were doing that Merlene Ottey would not have been known as the bronze queen.FYI Bolt ran 20.61 in the 200m when he was 15 years old; he ran 10.03 the first time he ran the 100m, he also still has the high school record 45.30 for Jamaica in the 400m; he ran all these times as a junior, so for you to say he cut his time by half a second is to ignore his progress from a junoir athlete to now. Usain Bolt is simply the greatest sprinter and maybe athlete we have ever seen.

    Junior Says:

Why is it that when Americans do anything considered great then all is well but if anyone beats them then you “have to look int that” like that said of Carl Lewis. Usain is just great and there are others in Jamaica who i believe are just as fast but not yet recognized. Just give the man his due credit not a failed test to his credit and 3 broken records in one Olympics and now a fourth broken record at Berlin.

    KidFischer Says:

All the years when the US dominated track, Jamaicans have always been there. Ottie, Cuthbert and Grace Jackson (to name few) were always there getting silver and bronze in the shadows of the US women in 100m and 200m. The Jamaican men were only getting the silver and bronze in the 400m, 4×400m and the 4×100m (all dominated by the US during the 80s and 90s). The rest of the world has always suspected drugs but not until the BALCO scandal did it all come to light.

Now that the Jamaicans are currently world leaders in sprint, the American athletes (including Carl Lewis) cannot believe it can be done without drugs because that’s what they did during their dominance.

Carl Lewis is talking about Bolt running 10.03 and sub 9.8 the following year and how surprising that is… well not for me. Reason: Bolt was only focusing on the 200m then. Now he is also focusing on the 100m hence he will naturally improve his time, and considering the talent he has, a year is more than enough for him to run the times he did.

Talking about surprises… it has always been a surprise to me how Jamaican Junior athletes dominate the US juniors at Penn relays and world juniors but as soon as they turn pro the US athletes are way ahead. Now that they can’t take their VITAMINS as they use to, the real US track is now exposed for the world to see.

    Louitch Says:

I don’t care about what Carl Lewis said, but Bolt is undoubtedly taking performance-enhancing drugs, just as all other top athletes. Period.

Please take professional sport for what it is.
3 things can be improved to continue breaking records:
    1) natural talent and performance
    2) drug performance (and medicine in general)
    3) material (shoes, track, etc.)

Only the last two can still improve over time!

  56. 56
    KidFischer Says:

Lets look at the 3 things mentioned that can improve breaking records:

    1) natural talent and performance
at high school (Jamaican boys champs) Bolt was setting records. At world juniors he was setting records. Now a pro, he is still setting records. Does this suggest talent???

    2) drug performance (and medicine in general)
He is the most tested athlete(along with Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay) for the past year despite what Carl Lewis has said. Bolt has been tested in and out of competition for the past year. Does this mean a lab similar to BALCO is in Jamaica that is producing new undetectable VITAMINS?

    3) material (shoes, track, etc.)
I must agree here that material has improved, mostly tracks. The modern track does give a lot of assistance to the runner. He’s guilty there for running on modern designed tracks. But isn’t the competition running on the same track?

He is no surprise on the scene. He came through the ranks, breaking records at all levels. Why is it so impossible to believe that he is the real deal? I guess I can’t blame you guys with all that corruption that the American sprinters of the past (including Lewis) have brought to the sport

didn’t they, and don’t they always test everyone before and after events… yet we have had numeorus champions fall from grace after many years of successfully beating tests.. so it’s idiotic to imply that merely because he is tested and has passed that he is therefore clean. it’s also equally idiotic to assume that merely because he broke the record in such dramatic fashion that he has to be a cheat. innocence should be assumed, but it is certainly fair to doubt and reserve final judgement. replace bolt’s name with any other record setter who was later discovered to be a cheat, and the initial discussion about the person’s accomplishments before they were busted would unfold the same way. with half of the posts making accusations, and half defending and accusing the accusers of being haters. it’s an unfortunate perversity of the nature of knowing something completely that we will never know for certain if he was truly clean for each one of his races, but that one negative test or revelation of cheating will impugn every race he ever ran. it’s unfair to him actually, but it’s a sport full of cheats, so a bit of cynicism is warranted. even if he was motivated by jealousy, carl lewis is right. and the fact that he himself was a record setting cheat, should actually lend credence to what he is saying as opposed to discrediting him - you illogical fools.

  58. 58
    KidFischer Says:

Illogical fools… Nice way to make a point by making accusations (like Carl Lewis) without any facts.

I have always admired Maurice Green for what he has done. I respect his world record of 9.78 if only for the fact that he has never been tested positive. (Whether or not he cheated is not for me to decide. The facts shows that he didn’t and that’s what I will accept)

Now here comes Bolt. Until it’s a fact that he is a VITAMINS taker I will not accuse him as such, but if he is, I can tell you that I will be one of the first to lash out. I can tell you this as well, Jamaicans will defend you to the end of the earth when you are right, but they will as quickly crucify you when you are in the wrong (Just ask Ottey). Bolt has more to fear from his countrymen that from you and me and the rest of the world.

You made my point brilliantly and in such elegant words:
“It’s idiotic to imply that merely because he is tested and has passed that he is therefore clean. It’s also equally idiotic to assume that merely because he broke the record in such dramatic fashion that he has to be a cheat.”

Now since the facts shows that he is not a Chester cheater, why not see him as a Billy Beater until proven otherwise?

We accuse him incase later on he is tested positive we can always say “I told you so”. Is “I told you so” that important to the point that we rather tear down this young man without any prove? Why can’t we just enjoy his talent, and if (god forbid) he is proven to be a cheater we attack him with everything we got (similar to what we all are doing now)

It’s their body and they should be able to put whatever substance in it they choose. They are the ones that have to live with the side-effects and results of their actions. Carl Lewis’s positive test covered up
    By Jacquelin Magnay
    April 18 2003

Olympic legend Carl Lewis is among more than 100 American athletes involved in a cover-up of drug use, documents reveal.

Lewis and two of his training partners all took the same three types of banned stimulants and were caught at the 1988 US Olympic trials, according to the documents released by a disgruntled former senior US anti-doping official, Dr Wade Exum.

But on appeal to their national Olympic committee, all were cleared of inadvertent doping. Two months later, at the Seoul Olympics, Lewis finished second in the 100 metres sprint. But when Canadian Ben Johnson failed his Olympic drug test, Lewis was awarded the 100m gold.

Lewis also won the Olympic long jump - as part of his career tally of nine Olympic gold medals - and his training partner, Joe De Loach, won the 200m in Seoul.

Lewis’s lawyer, Martin Singer, has responded to the revelations by saying his client had taken only a herbal remedy.

    advertisement

    advertisement

“Carl did nothing wrong,” Mr Singer told The Orange County Register. “There was never intent.”

The latest documents show Lewis tested positive for the banned stimulants found in cold medications: pseudoephedrine, ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine.

The World Anti-Doping Agency’s chairman, Dick Pound, dismissed the “no intent” defence. Mr Pound has seen copies of the documents and said that in some instances there was almost “automatic forgiveness” by the US officials.

Letters written by a US Olympic Committee executive, Baaron Pittenger, were sent advising some athletes of their positive drug-test results - and at the same time told them they were being cleared.

“It’s got to be pretty embarrassing to the USOC,” said Mr Pound, “to have their secretary-general writing in the letter, where he advises an athlete of a positive A sample, ‘I have to send you this, but we already decided this was inadvertent.’ That whole process turned into a joke.”

    Dr Exum, the former USOC
director for drug control from 1991 to 2000, released more than 30,000 pages of documents to Sports Illustrated. They confirm widespread suspicion of the USOC drug-testing system before it was moved to an independent body, the US Anti Doping Agency, after the Sydney Olympics.

The Herald reported last year that a US athlete tested positive to steroids in 1999 but was allowed to compete - and win an Olympic gold medal - in the 2000 Sydney Games. US officials still refuse to divulge the name of the athlete, or those of 13 other athletes who had failed drug tests around the same time, citing privacy laws.

In the Seoul 100m, Britain’s Linford Christie was elevated from third to second after Johnson was disqualified. In later years, Christie was banned for using steroids.

The International Olympic Committee’s medical commission chairman, Arne Ljungqvist, said the Exum documents “fit a pattern” of failure to report on positive drug cases. But the USOC called Dr Exum’s accusations “baseless”.

Dr Exum said there were more than 100 positive tests for US athletes who won 19 Olympic medals between 1988 and 2000, but many were allowed to keep competing.

Now as for what Mr Usain Bolt does whenever he wins a race, is what for those of us can remembered doing whenever we feel elated after doing something at school or Sports day by imitating flying like a bird or a plane in most cases. Yes my friends, to us in and from Jamaica, it’s called child’s play. Now as for T-son Gay the CHI-CHI-Man that said he have a groin injury yet ran 9.71sec.? Oh come on! It’s all a part of the game that the American Athlete’s play to justify if they lost at some games, but it won’t work with Mr Usain Bolt because he has his own before and after the game cap on. Early effort to drug test Olympic athletes kept secret
With organizers and athletes alike uncomfortable with testing regimen, officials chose to keep 1984 results confidential.
    BY SCOTT M. REID
    THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
    Comments 4 | Recommend 5
LOS ANGELES – The U.S. Olympic Committee, concerned about the potential embarrassment of a doping scandal involving American athletes at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, conducted an informal drug testing program in the months leading up to the Los Angeles Games that allowed Olympic-caliber athletes testing positive for banned substances to escape sanctions, according to documents obtained by The Orange County Register and interviews with three officials involved with the program.
At least 34 U.S. track and field athletes either tested positive or had possible positive tests during six weeks of informal testing by USOC in the spring of 1984, according to confidential USOC memos. None of the athletes was sanctioned or lost eligibility, according to USOC documents and interviews.
Athletes were informed of their positive tests and told continued use of banned drugs could result in positive tests at the U.S. Olympic Trials and Olympic Games, where violations would lead to bans from competition.
“It gave them a heads up,” said Ollan Cassell, executive director of U.S. track and field’s governing body from 1980 to 1997. “It let them know what was coming, what to expect.”

The then-head of the USOC sports medicine council said a report raising concerns about the informal testing and a blood doping program involving the U.S. Olympic cycling team but the USOC president chose not to pursue the issue.

To get ready for drug testing structure ready for the 1984 Olympic Games, the USOC not only had to get the drug testing lab accredited by the International Olympic Committee but had to set up numerous crews to collect urine samples at competition sites.

Officials involved with the program either could not recall, said they did not know or would not confirm whether athletes who tested positive for banned substances in the informal testing went on to compete in the Los Angeles Games, where the United States won 174 medals, 83 of them gold, in an Olympics weakened by the Soviet-bloc boycott. Thirty-five of those medals, 16 of the golds, were won by American track and field athletes.

“It’s not fair, it’s not right,” Dr. Irving Dardik, in 1984 the chairman of USOC sports medicine council, said of the informal testing program. “If an athlete tested positive, they should have been penalized.”

Dardik said he hand delivered his report to Robert H. Helmick shortly after Helmick took over as USOC president in early 1985. Three weeks later, Dardik asked Helmick about the report.

“Helmick said ‘What report?’ ” Dardik recalled. “It was clear you were not to make any waves that could in anyway implicate the internal workings of (U.S. track’s governing body) or the USOC.”

Dick Pound, the former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency and a International Olympic Committee member from Canada, criticized the informal testing program, saying the United States “was running a drug counseling program.”

“They were allowing athletes to check their clearance times,” Pound said, referring to the time from when an athlete takes a banned substance to the time when that substance will not be detected by a drug test.

But Kenneth S. “Casey” Clarke, the USOC sports medicine director who oversaw the informal testing, and Cassell are unapologetic about the program that they said also tested athletes in other sports at the USOC Training Center in Colorado Springs.

“It was done quietly and efficiently,” Clarke said of the informal testing.

Clarke and Cassell said the informal testing was first step in establishing a drug policy and was necessary in determining how widespread the use of banned drugs, such as anabolic steroids and stimulants among U.S. athletes.

“We were trying to get a handle on how big the problem was, what athletes were taking so the scientist could test for them, and what the benefit were of what they were taking,” Cassell said.

“I didn’t have any concerns about it,” Cassell continued. “No athlete would be punished. It helped us find out how deep (the U.S. doping problem) was.”

And the extent of banned substance use by American athletes was a major concern of USOC officials and other U.S. sports federations in the months leading up to the Los Angeles Games, the three former officials said.

While they said the program was in part set up as a dry run to the drug testing operation that would be used at the 1984 Games, the former officials said the USOC’s desire to avoid a repeat of a drug scandal that marred the 1983 Pan American Games was a driving force behind the informal testing program.

Athletes were caught off guard when Germany’s Manfred Donike revealed a new test to detect steroids at the Pan Am Games in Caracas, Venezuela. After a Canadian weightlifter tested positive for steroids athletes, a dozen American athletes in several sports unexpectedly left Venezuela and returned to the United States.

The USOC, Cassell said, was “embarrassed, upset after the Pan Am Games.”

But while the USOC wanted to tackle the doping issue, there was also concern within the organization’s Colorado Springs headquarters and at several national sports federations that a drug testing program that sanctioned athletes who cheated might weaken the U.S. Olympic team for Los Angeles.

“There was a feeling at the USOC that the Russians were getting (away with doping) and that we should be getting ahead of (the issue),” Dardik said. “But I also remember a lot of USOC meetings talking about testing there were a lot of people concerned ‘if we do this are we going to ruin our team?’

    “It was really political.”

Cassell said there were also concerns about lawsuits.

In early 1984, the USOC decided that all U.S. Olympic team members would have to pass drug tests before competing in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo and the Summer Games in Los Angeles. But USOC also signed off on the informal testing program focusing on Summer Olympic athletes where USOC officials suspected doping was more widespread, officials said.

“We were trying to get the (drug testing) system going for the Olympics, get the (drug testing) crews ready,” Clarke said. “And, yes, we wanted to get the athletes aware, make them know they had to straighten up.”
“It wasn’t a punitive test, wasn’t a punitive program,” Cassell said. “We wanted to determine what kind of problem were facing and make the athletes aware, let them know they could have a problem.”

The informal program was voluntary, the officials said. Athletes were contacted by the USOC and asked to participate in the program.

Fifty track athletes were contacted by the USOC in the early spring of 1984 and all 50 participated in testing conducted by Dr. Harmon Brown, a USOC drug testing crew chief, on March 27 in Los Angeles, according to a confidential USOC memo. Brown died last November.

Under drug testing protocol an athlete’s urine is split at the time of the test in two samples. If the first test, the so-called “A” sample, is positive, the second sample or “B” is tested to verify the positive result. If the “B” is also positive the result is ruled positive and the athlete faces sanctions including a ban from competition.
The tests for 28 of the 50 resulted in “possible positive findings” of banned substance use, according to the June 5, 1984, “Informal Drug Testing of Track &Field Athletes” memo from Clarke to Cassell.

But second verification tests were not conducted and the athletes were not penalized and were allowed to continue competing.

“Because Formal Testing receives priority at the Lab, so many of these samples needed repeated testing and the imminence of the Trials, preliminary results are released before final verification can be gained,” Clarke wrote. “A non-user athlete (inadvertent use) will learn why it is a possible positive. The user-athlete will know why.”

Ten track athletes were tested by Brown on May 8, 1984 also in Los Angeles, according to a July 9, 1984 Clarke memo to Cassell.

Six of the 10 had “positive findings” for testosterone, the memo said.

Clarke said athletes in other sports were tested based on “basically whoever was available at the (USOC) training center” in Colorado Springs.

In a memo later in 1984, Clarke wrote that “no report” of the 28 “possibles” “will go to Harmon.” Dardik said he also didn’t receive copies of Clarke’s memos and didn’t learn of their existence and the exact number of positive or possible positive results until informed by the Register last week.
“I never received any of those, which is surprising since I was chairman of the sports medicine council,” Dardik said. “That was a lot of the problem with the USOC back then, they were always trying to keep things to themselves.

In 1988 after Ben Johnson declared that they were all doing it, the people blacklisted Johnson and tried to push him into the background. Out of sight out of mind.

This year 2003, it was disclosed that Carl Lewis tested positive for a substance in 1988 but it was not deemed serious enough to pursue. So they say. The only thing in Lewis’ favour is that he is not muscled like the rest of the gorillas.

Also in the document regarding 1988, it is mentioned that 8 members of the US team had tested positive however it was covered up by their organisation.

Such was the lack of trust that WADA was established .. an independent organisation which aimed to do the World’s drug testing - World Anti Doping Agency

Dennis Mitchell another athlete in the 1988 Olympic Final was subsequently caught and banned from the sport.

We now move towards the build-up to the 2000 Olympics, the first year of Linford Christie’s retirement and the year he was caught while being tested for an indoor meeting.

He was supposedly in retirement and it seemed to be just rewards even if at the time he was ‘maybe’ innocent.

Jamaicans are on steroids since birth. Yes I said it, so what? All you haters it’s not Jamaican or people from the Caribbean fault that they are nurtured with the best spring water, herds, fruits, spices, foods, fishes, animals and bird meats that God the creator has given them. While in American it’s all about fast food and a proper meal maybe once a year at Thanks Given. My son said to me sometime ago, that when he was in Jamaica attending school he could always count on one hand the amount of students in is class that was over weight. While here in America he sometimes need his toes to make up the count for same above? Most people in the West Indies grew up for the better part of their lives without been on vitamins. No wonder Stella plus many more folks go the Caribbean to get their grove back…. LOL. Just go down there and you’ll feel the Power and the FORCE. Don’t be a hater my friends, since it’s a heavy load to carry around mentally. Bob Marley said in one of his song, “They are going to be tired of seeing his face, but they can’t get him out of the race.” Go in peace HATERS and love always??

    Carl Lewis is an idiot.
For him to quote Veronica Campbell as going from Champ to not making the team is foolish. She ran 10.88 and got 4th at trials! She ran an incredible time and was simply beaten by 3 even more impressive times. No shame in that.

Tyson Gay ran 9.71 and got silver at worlds, and in Beijing didn’t make the Finals, does that mean he’s dirty? Or does it mean he was injured, and this year he’s healthy? Shit happens.
Carl is just jealous because all his records are broken. He’s a bitch.. And everyone knows he’s living in the closet too.

Second of all as far as cheating. You saw the race did you not or are you just going by what you heard? He never cheated do not hate on a country for being faster than yours .. just see how your country can improve next time.. then again its funny how Jamaica and other countries practice on US facilities and win.. so get your game up. BIGUP everyone in support of Bolt. I am happy for him and send upmost congratulations.. No matter where people come from Bottom line quit hating and making your racist accusations. If they were USA or something then the tables turn.
