Stefan Schumacher

October 6th, 2008 filed in Cycling

Stefan Schumacher, a German Cyclist, has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance during the Tour de France. Schumacher won both time trials during the Tour, and held the yellow race leader’s jersey for two days as well. French newspaper L’Equipe is reporting that Schumacher tested positive for CERA, an advanced version of the blood-boosting hormone EPO. The positive test result comes as a result of testing carried out at both Chatenay-Malabry and Lausanne using two different testing methods to detect CERA in blood samples.

If true, Schumacher’s name would be added to the list of other tainted stage winners from the 2008 tour with Riccardo Ricco, Leonardo Piepoli, and Alejandro Valverde. He would also join the list of tainted yellow jersey wearers from the tour with Valverde and Frank Schleck. Podium Cafe reports on Schumacher’s history :

Schumacher has had several previous brushes with the doping authorities. In 2005, he tested positive for the stimulant Cathine, but was subsequently acquitted. In 2007, he recorded a high hematocrit on the eve of the World Championships, and showed traces of amphetamine use in a police test following a car accident.

Stefan Schumacher CHEATed in the Tour de France

Once again an athlete has proven to us that something too good to be true, probably is. Stefan Schumacher came out of no where to win the 4th stage of the Tour de France, the Time Trial. It was the surprise of the day, as Schumacher put 33 seconds into the World Champion Fabian Cancellara. Due to this result, the German wore yellow for two days, but lost it in a fall. He was then named most aggressive rider on stage 16, and again dominated Cancellara in the final time trial on stage 20. It was obvious to all who were watching that Schumacher was dirty, and now the proof is out. I figure it will only be a matter of days before his fellow overachieving teammates Bernhard Kohl and Sebastian Lang are also outed as a dopers. Remembers those names.

Stefan Schumacher BEAT his competition on the Tour de France

Chester this has to stop. Every time an athlete performs well, you are so quick to jump on the cheating bandwagon. You did it with Usain Bolt and the Chinese Gymnastics Team, and then you started attacking Lance Armstrong and the rest of Cycling. There is no proof that Schumacher has tested positive for anything. The only thing we have is the word of L’Equipe, which has been known to be wrong and overzealous in the past. That French paper has it in for any cyclist that performs well in the Tour de France. Which is probably why they never report doping allegations on their own athletes, who can’t seem to win a race anymore. If France and L’Equipe would like their athletes to win stages and jerseys in their Tour, then I would suggest they cease the allegations, and start training harder.

What do you think, did Stefan Schumacher CHEAT, or BEAT?

It looks like there is a little bit more to this story than just L’Equipe allegations Billy. Details are coming in fast, as Reuters is now reporting :

“Tour Director Christian Prudhomme confirmed it (the positive test) to me,” German sports news agency SID quoted Hans-Michael Holczer, head of Schumacher’s team Gerolsteiner, as saying. “I have no doubt that it’s true,” he added.

“I am hearing it from you for the first time,” the agency quoted the German rider as saying. “I can only say that I have not doped,” he added. “This is complete nonsense.”

Holczer told SID legal steps against Schumacher were planned. “We have all been betrayed by these people,”

    And Earthtimes has this :

Schumacher’s team- and room-mate Austrian Bernhard Kohl, who finished third in this year’s Tour, told Austrian journalists that he did not want to comment on the case.

“I spoke to Stefan on the phone today and he should really be the first one to hear of these matters. I want to say nothing until it is official,” he said.

Wow, this started as just rumors during the Tour, and then just a report from a french newspaper. Now it has been confirmed and 100% of the people voting on this site have already convicted the guy. I guess that shows what patience the fans have right now for doping.

RUH ROH, Just saw this one :

“According to the Dutch newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen five teams are implicated. The paper alleged last week that two are at the forefront of the fight against doping, running internal anti-doping programmes.”

That sounds like it could possibly be the American teams, Columbia and Garmin Chipotle.

I see there are no links for the multiple Valverde smears. What is the basis for calling Valverde’s stage win tainted? As an avid fan, I know of none whatsoever.

Valverde has been implicated multiple times, especially in relation to Operacion Puerto. We didn’t link to it, because we don’t have an article up here about him. He has not yet tested positive or been suspended, but he does fit the description of “tainted” in the same way that Frank Schleck does. See links below:

I just read an article which stated that the German authorities have searched Schumacher’s home and removed documents from the premises as part of the investigation. I suppose they are looking to find the source of the CERA. In cases like this, when they find the source, they normally find an entire web of deceit and cheating. I don’t think we’ve heard the last of this by a long shot.
