Serena Williams

March 10th, 2009 filed in Tennis

Serena Williams is an American professional tennis player who is ranked World No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association, having now held that ranking on four different occasions. She is the current US Open and Australian Open singles champion and has won 20 Grand Slam titles: ten in singles, eight in women’s doubles, and two in mixed doubles. There is something else you may notice about Serena, she is huge! Is she Cheating, or Beating?

Recently our friends over at The World of Isaac pointed out just how large Serena has gotten in recent years:

I swear in college I lifted like five times a week and never looked like this. Sure, I may have mixed in a 12 beer night with some cocktails but that shouldn’t have hindered me that much. Right?

And I don’t care that she is tensing every muscle in her body. She looks like Sammy Sosa circa 1998 in this picture. Maybe they should start roid testing in women’s tennis. I’m guessing Serena and Amelie Mauresmo might show some statistical testosterone anomalies.

Serena Williams is CHEATing
Chester Cheater

A picture is worth a thousand words, and that picture screams CHEATER! I’m not going to say that Serena isn’t a good tennis player, because she is, and has been for a long time. But her career certainly slowed for awhile, and now has made a sudden resurgence. What is the difference? Only about 10 inches on those biceps. It may not necessarily be steroids, but she is on something. According to a recent Sports Illustrated article, the WADA and ITF have joined forces to create a new drug testing program for Tennis. Who spoke out against it? Serena Williams :

“I think it’s too much. It’s very invasive. … Basically, they show up at your house on any day. I jump from city to city all the time. First of all, I never tell people where I am because I like to do my own thing.”

You keep doing your “own thing” Serena, but don’t be surprised when it gets you suspended from Tennis.

Serena Williams is BEATing her competition
Billy Beater

Serena Williams has been one of the best women’s tennis players in the world for a period of 10 years. She has never failed a drug test, despite being tested for several years under existing drug testing policies. Just because a woman lifts some weights and gets large, it is ok to accuse her of cheating? Please provide some proof Chester before making your allegations, and bringing down yet another strong role model.

So what do you think? Does Serena Williams CHEAT, or BEAT?

[...] Serena Williams on Steroids? (Cheat or Beat) [...]

    tennis roids Says:

Serena is just the most obvious example of the steroid problem in tennis. I think that most of the top players are juicing. And to say “provide proof” is not really an argument. This wouldn’t be called “cheat or beat” if we already had the proof. You have to use a certain amount of common sense. She is bigger than the East German Swimmers from the 70’s and I don’t remember anyone defending them. She hasn’t failed a drug test? That is the same argument that Marion Jones and Barry Bonds and Tony Mandarich and just about every athlete who eventually tests positive used.
Either she has found a way to work around the testing or the WTA is giving their big name players a pass. Hopefully, with WADA in, they will do some real drug testing in tennis and catch these folks soon.

    v Says:

OMG this is ludicrous… i mean serena has always been muscular for a girl, even from an early age, it doesnt mean shes using or abusing steriods, the fact is she is a complete champion who has given so many people someone who they can relate to as a rolemodel so to make such fabricated nonsense is disrespectful and it insinuates that someone is probably envious that they dont have a body worthy of comparing to serena… so BE A MAN and grow up!

    Lee Says:

She’s got skills but she’s obviously very muscular for a sport such as tennis. This is not about envy or insults, its about looking at a human being and making an observation. Of course it could be genetics, but looking at her sister’s frame, I doubt that too. Good luck to her.

  5. 5
    Boz Says:

Just check out the difference in diameter between the arms. Of course in tennis the racket arm will be larger, but it seems her’s is twice the size. This is symptomatic of steroid use. Considering her career resurgence at such a late time, along with the major surgery on her left knee it looks suspicious. Women reach physical peak at 16. While some flex is to be expected, nonetheless she is years past it at 26. With the major cut in the knee (we use arthroscopic for anything short of ACLs) it is interesting that she is able to be a top player again. Along with her aggression (the freakout with the french player where she threatened the girl if she approaches the net) and physical resurgence it would be reasonable to expect both HGH and steroid use. Remember that track and field, with its more comprehensive program failed to spot Marion Jones. The chickenshit tennis system is a joke.

    Andy Says:

I’d be disappointed if Serena was a user, but nothing shocks me any more. She has always been big and ripped. I think she’s natural, but who knows? I do know several black women who are both big and defined and who have never touched a weight or a steroid. There is a small, but significant percentage of black women who are naturally muscular-and Serena’s one of them.

  7. 7
    Linda Says:

How can anyone deny that Serena’s build is NOT normal for a woman. Her arms are huge and her body is just too muscular. She called that Spanish woman a cheater but who is really the cheater here? Her opponents seem to tire at the end of a match but she has the same stamina at the end as the beginning. I wonder if they are really testing in tennis — has anyone been caught? I remember Martina Navratoliva had muscles but she worked out and was not HUGE.

  8. 8
    YardieRudeBoy Says:

They sure don’t make white girls like that? Yet it was said on the WTA circuit that playing Martina Navratoliva, Lindsay Davenport and Amelie Mauresmo are like playing against men. But I guess Serena Williams is just in a class by herself? I wonder why???

    balthus dors Says:

I can assure based on many years of medical practice that Serena is on steroids. But the tennis pundits never talk about it. Renee Richards had to come out with the truth. Why is Serena allowed to hide behind the bulk of a masculinized body? It is absurd.

  10. 10
    Toomuchtennis Says:

The fact that Serena is abusing steriods is not only obvious but should be considered criminal. She is cheating opponents out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. You need to look no further than her sudden knee injury that kept her out of the olympics (where drug testing is mandatory).

Good by Sir Serena Williams, forced retirement through drug testing will soon catch-up with you!

    linda chiappetta Says:

Oh Oh! just saw the williams/clijsters match. First she broke her racket slamming it on the ground and then she threatened to shove the tennis ball down the throat of one of the lineswomen for calling her for a foot fault at the end of the game, causing her to lose the match.

Could all this anger be caused by anything you can think of? duh…

  12. 12
    John Mauldin Says:

Serena’s behavior last night in the semi-final of the US Open is one more, of the several, irrefutable signs that something wrong.

I have closely followed tennis since 1977 and this is the worst behavior I have ever seen by a tennis player. I have never seen a professional or weekend tennis players act like this. Serena’s behavior was much worse than the all-time bad boy of tennis, John McEnroe. To my knowledge, he never threatened lines people as Serena did last night. I have seen her explode at other players on other occasions; yet her actions last night were abhorrent. This begs the question, What has she done in smaller venues when not on prime time television?

This sets a low precedent for the game of tennis. Should Serena not be penalized for her actions, beyond losing one point in last night’s game, we may see more shameful behavior like hers.

Some people feel her frequent maniacal outbursts are drug induced.

I recall one of Serena’s outburst against Jelena Jankovic. Some against lines people. Yet, many of these outbursts occur when “getting pumped up.” Yet, when her eyes seem as though they are about to pop out and her head about to explode, it seems there are other unseen forces at work.

As has been mentioned before, Serena entered the 2007 Australian Open ranked 81st in the world because of infrequent play. It was also mentioned by reporters that she had not been practicing routinely. She was also carrying 30 to 40 pounds of fat – much heavier than any tennis player, male or female, I had ever seen. Yet, defeated all her competitors, all of whom were in top athletic condition.

And how could she go from normal size and weight, at the age of 17 to 19, to an extremely pronounced figure with profoundly thick limbs? To add such size would require an extensive, aggressive weight-lifting routine over a long period of time. How could she maintain such a routine while touring the professional tennis circuit? This is very peculiar. In sharp contrast, almost every tennis player wishes to be light for enhanced running speed and agility. Consider professional football players in the position of wide-receiver: Have you ever seen one who is bulky as Serena?

So, her frequent outbursts, winning major tournaments without much practice or play and her immense size in relationship to the other professional tennis players on the WTA seems to point to one conclusion: steroids.

The last line of defense, for those who wish to defend Serena, is testing. Yet, testing can be subject to big money and corruption. Even The World’s Series was a scam one year. Perhaps, it was a scam more than once.

The United States Tennis Association must strongly condemn Serena’s actions. I feel the USTA should also consider imposing a suspension and monetary fines.

But we may see a cover-up. And the biggest cover-up, should there be one, will come from the media in which they will marginalize and brush this aside.

  13. 13
    Michele Erbacher Says:

USTA - Do the right thing. Send a message to the young tennis players coming up that criminal behavior on the court (if they hadn’t been on a tennis court, the lines woman would have every right to file an assault charge against her - actually, I’m hoping that she does anyway,) by fining Serena at least $250,000 and suspending her from at least one slam for 2010. Maybe then she’ll wake up and come out of her steroid induced haze long enough to realized the severity of what she did.

  14. 14
    astonished Says:

Watched the Federer vs. Del Potro match yesterday - noticed how both of these guys do NOT have the muscles or the temper of Serena Williams. She looks like Ben Johnson looked when he was caught on steroids and she also exhibits the same type of temper - she should have been banned from tournaments for a season and forfeited her prize money from the US Open and then this would warn others not to do the same in other tournaments. North Americans love agre3ssion and fights - look at the NHL, tennis is supposed to be a gentlemanly sport - Serena fits the gentleman piece!!!

  15. 15
    habfan1233 Says:

Serena represents everything that is wrong with professional sport in general and tennis in particular. The gamesmenship is at the worst level ever even with 6 refs and computers. Then you add an out of shape, probably steroid laden primadona who has “never lost a match to a better opponent in her life” and you get the horid display of last weekend. Yes she should be suspended. A message needs to be sent to the tennis world. But it won’t happen because they want her to drag her fat ass to tournaments so more people can go see her act that way or worse by tanking when she is not “up” for the big tournaments… Furthermore how racist would it be to accuse a black woman of anything.

  16. 16
    Raymond Roy Says:

What a nice bunch of racists that comes up with accusations without any proof!
Serena is America`s ultimate athlete! But she is black!…and that offends some people.
Send her my way in Canada and she will get the treatment she deserve.

Why is her head and face so large. Compare her visage and head to hers from ‘99 and one wonders. They say doping causes your head circumference to increase, and bone mass in the face to also.

The USTA’s drug testing program is a joke. Just check out this article that sums it up nicely. Frankly, he was too kind, because every insider knows that Serena and Venus both avoid testing like the plague. This despite the fact that you would almost have to be trying to get caught using performance enhancing drugs in tennis. Too bad Serena chose steroids, because it is just too obvious. Also, playing that race card doesn’t work anymore. Anyone who tries to say this is racist is simply showing how incredibly stupid they are.

I wish I could shoot one of those cops nets at Serena W, and drag her to the scales at a truck station. That chick’s GOT to run between 180-200 lbs, built like a frikkin linebacker with thighs as thick as my waist along with matching calves.

But that’s not why I’m responding thus: you’ve GOT to check out the guns on Aussie female “Sam” Stosur. Nearly as big as Serena’s, except she’s white, which conveys less muscle definition.

    Remigius Says:

I’m an American. The Williams sisters are American. I would NEVER accuse an American athlete of doing performance-enhancers,steroids, whatever.
BUT…just out of idle curiosity, when were those two last tested? And doesn’t it stretch the limits of possibility that BOTH OF THEM have lasted for such a long time in tennis without said enhancers being used? Test them! And let’s see if that puts the question to rest once and for all.

It’s not that hard to beat a drug test. Does anyone remember that football player who was in sports illustrated? He confessed to taking steroids and evn shared some of the ways he beat the system. If a FOOTBALL player is smart enough to beat the system i’m sure serena has help (Richard Williams)in beating the system and taking those roids. SHE IS OBVIOUSLY ON STEROIDS SHE IS CHEATING, EGOTISTICAL BITCH.

just saw the Australian open. It was really obvious that Williams is on something…she is twice the size of Henin and her right arm is huge… I would like to know if the tennis association is just covering up or really are stupid… Compare the pictures of Williams when she first started playing professionally and now… and she’s 28 years old and not slowing down. What a shame to win by cheating…

  31. 31
    tennisfan Says:

if she is not cheating, she should shut up 99% who believe she is and be agreeable to tests.. instead she skips tourns that have testing and angerily states she will quit abruptly if ever subjected to.

am watching the Medibank International tournament in Sydney (Feb 5). Dementevia just beat Williams 6-3, 6-2. Williams couldn’t hit a serve in and the unforced errors were huge. Not the same player. I guess since it’s not a major she doesn’t get juiced up…

    Nar Says:

Some people get muscular very easily and some don’t. Some people get fat very easily and some don’t. I grow very quickly when I lift weights. My brother who has the same mother and father does not grow easily and our other brother gets fat very easily. People need to stop vilifying people out of ignorance, jealousy and/or hatred.

Oh, and by the way steroids do not make you big. They allow tissue to heal faster than normal. If you are injured you heal faster. If you lift weights your muscles recover faster. I do not use steroids nor do I think they should be used for performance enhancement. If you know someone with asthma their inhaler is probably steroid based. If you have knee, hip, elbow or shoulder pain you will probably get a steroid shot from your doctor.

Tennisfan: You need to stop making up lies!! Serena has never evaded drug tests; furthermore, ALL TOURNAMENTS HAVE DRUG TESTS UPON COMPLETING MATCHES, ESPECIALLY GRANDSLAMS!! Testing is not an option nor is it something that a tennis player can evade. The WTA & ATF have the strictest drug policies!! Get your facts straight before you open your mouth! Chester: I have a 02 French Open picture of Serena and she’s the same size. Serena has always been buff.

    JT Says:

The fact that Serena has passed multiple drug tests doesn’t mean anything. Cycling is a sport awash in performance enhancing technology, few riders you can actually name are clean and the athletes who fail tests are just the tip of the iceberg. Track and field was a joke in the 80s and 90s. I’ve heard insiders allege that Carl Lewis juiced every bit as much as Ben Johnson but the Olympic committee covered it up because Lewis had a clean image and generated wealth for the sport. If an athlete is vehemently opposed to testing on principle then that may indicate guilt but even if they vociferously champion mandatory random, ambush style, guerrilla testing that may only mean that they’ve been granted immunity from the powers that be and thus feel particularly emboldened to speak out. Nothing is exactly as it seems. If someone is using then players on the pro tennis circuit have a couple of options: they can blow the whistle but there’s the matter of having unequivocal proof, that’s hard to come by or they can start using in order to compete or they can lose matches, ranking points, endorsements, money, their career, dignity, all their hard work, etc… Which would you choose? Wake up. Most pro sports are fixed like a 60s TV quiz show.

Nar, the steroids prescribed for asthma are NOT anabolic steroids, they are corticosteroids and do not affect muscle mass, in fact, they will cause fat accumulation.

wHAT WOULD THE REPLIES BE IF SERENA WERE WHITE? Amazing, even though Serena has taken drug test after drug test, the majority people,in their prejudices, still say she takes drugs. My goodness! Night is Day and Day is Night.

  41. 41
    disgusted xfan Says:

I’m with ‘astonished’. If you compare the sisters (behavior and physique) it sure seems like Serena is doping. She and Venus are like night and day ‘george thomas’. She must have an amazing training regime that’s given her the biggest biceps in women’s or men’s tennis. It’s so incredible, no one talks about it. No one (commentators, tourny officials, WTA) talks about the growing problem of doping in tennis either. Could it be that huge piles of $$$ quietly corrupts and entire sport? Can you say baseball?

  42. 42
    Traian Says:

Serena is doing something, it’s very clear for the distance. May be is not about ordinary drugs, may be is some medical Est Germany Doctors Trataments used for the German Olimpics Teams. Blod transfusions and liver interventions and so on. Try to remember who was the winners olimpic teams in the past ? The officials are only interested on the tenis show and they said that all the players take sometimes something and they are equal. If the money comes, it’s perfect. It’s a pity for the young players.

  43. 43
    anon Says:

Adequate drug testing needs to be implemented whether certain players like it or not, consider it invasive or not, like to “do their own thing, or not”. IDF & WADA need to do it NOW..even if some performance drugs still can’t be detected by test, enough can to weed out the juicers.

  44. 44
    Robert Says:

The tennis world probably knows that Serena Williams is on steriods. But they shall do nothing about it. Just as they did nothing about her threatening to kill a lineswoman over a line call. Since that incident SW has won two major Grand Slam tournaments (Australian, Wimbledon). The tennis world is happy that Serena wins. Even though she is as muscular as any MALE on the ATP tour much less any female the WTA tour.

The leadership in tennis look the other way and the media does the same. No one has the bravery to test the Williams sisters and no one in the media has the bravery to take them to task over their drug use.It seems more than obvious that Serena is taking some form of steriods considering how large her arms and shoulders are compared to that of a normal woman. If the Williams sisters aren’t using drugs then they should take a test to prove ths once a for all. If they don’t then the public has a right to question whether they are clean or not.

  45. 45
    justme Says:

It’s blatantly obvious she is on some kind of PEDs. Her physique has changed dramatically since she first started. She used to be a normal, slender girl while now she is more mascular than some men on the tour. Before she had quite soft feature and now she looks SO manly. And the mood swings and overly aggressive playing style, that’s just not normal.
Also, one of the tricks of steroid abusers is taking time off to get all the drugs out of their system. What did Serena do after the AO? Took almost 5 months off with a fake leg injury. She did not even bother with faking too much as I’ve seen some photos of her attending parties wearing super high-heels.

  46. 46
    roxy or elswhere Says:

I watched her 2002 QF against Capriati the other day; she looked aerobic fit. Now? I agree there are too many knee injuries, cut feet, excuses, etc, and her bloated body could indicate some type of steroid, maybe performance enhancing, could also mean Dairy Queen. But losing her would mean loss of revenue. Why would she refuse to take drug test? Still some doubt about her earnestness

    Narcus Says:

Hahaha, Serena has always been very thick and muscular. Even as a young teen you saw those genes forming. Have any of you payed attention to what her parents look like?
Her Mother is Huge and so is her Father.

She also has BIG TITTIES and if you use steroids like Testosterone, your TITTIES go away. That is a known fact. She also has smooth muscle which only ripples when she is in action or “tensed.” That is normal.

WOW, it seems today if you are in shape or have muscles you are Juiced.

You guys are sad. Everybody is not made the same. Some are gifted with genes. Just the way it is. Just like some of us have 10 inch dicks and others, 4 inches. She has big titties and some have flat chests. Some people are very tall and others are midgets.

  50. 50
    Narcus Says:

The other thing, yeah, I’m going to say it, She is an African-American. Anybody that has gone to school or grew up with African-Americans know the deal: Many are naturally bigger than the norm. A lot of Black girls are naturally thick. Some are very skinny as well but many are thick. If it is in your genes it is in your genes. When they add training to their genes, forget it, they get big.

    And I’m white saying this.

She has always been big/thick. You will grow naturally as you get older with your genes, what you eat and how you train.

And remember, those Titties are an indication she most likley is not juiced. Those titties would get more muscular and get smaller.

Next time, check out the size of her Mother. Venus is built more like her Father.

  51. 51
    Narcus Says:

Injuries: just to cover this, they all get injured. Just a matter of when. For Serena, age, wear and tear, training, and if you are trying to move that big of a frame around on a tennis court, forget it, it’s going to be a disaster. Reason why the vast majority of tennis players are not of that body-type. It’s crazy that she even made it that far. Now her sister, Venus, yeah, more of the tennis player body-type even though she is still tall/big although not thick like her sister.

They all break down eventually. I think sometimes it is training too. The way some train which includes lifting weights, can sometimes be harmful. Depends.

And I laugh at people talking about behavior. WOW, have any of you not grown up in a rich area?
Have all of you grown up with Saints?

I guess everybody with a bad attitude and shows violent tendencies is on something. How about, there are just some crazy people out there or more prone to outbursts.
She is cool and collected most of the time. Only in competition does things change but so it did with many of them throughout the years.

Go to the ghettos of America. It will change your perspective.

Lots of athletes lose their temper, even in tennis. Especially in tennis.

  52. 52
    Richard Says:

I think Serena is a cheater. I think she is on steroids or something. Afterall, if she cut her foot in a restaurant and I was one of her sponsors I would be slapping them with a lawsuit so quick there head would spin. If for nothing else loss of income.

  53. 53
    Tod Says:

Her Mother is as big a beast as her. If she had worked out like her daughter she would be the same as well.
And her Father looks like one of those guys from the past before humans evolved. She comes from a big family. And she has always been muscled since her youth. She was always going to get thicker as she age.
    She was never “lady-like.”

I like the breast theory as well. If she was on steroids, those big breasts of hers would be gone. Female bodybuilders get implants for a reason, they lose their breast fat with exposure to steroids.

I think people just get intimidated by someone else physique, especially when it is on the rarer side. And with all this talk of PEDs going on, its easy to accuse.

She’s a big bitch. She, unlike others I’ve seen, just decided to work-out and eat to help her body perform at its best.

By the way, you should NEVER judge your shitty genes with someone else, especially an elite athletes.

I’ll never be as big as Shaq. Shaq has omega-genes. I don’t. But i won’t go around accusing him using PEDs to get 7′0 tall, 300 pounds.
    He’s a MAN, and I’m a boy compared.

Some are tall, some are not.
Some are well muscled, some are not.
Some have big breasts, some don’t.
Some have big dicks, some don’t.
Some have higher testosterone/hormone levels than others.

Just the way it is. We aren’t all created equal.

Now of course, there is the possibility she and many others have or are using PEDs. But you need better proof.
