Laptopgate - Charlie Weis

Charlie Weis may be at it again. During Notre Dame’s 23-7 loss to Michigan State today, a laptop was seized from Notre Dame’s coaching box. Michigan State asked a liaison to the officials to remove the laptop after noticing one being used by the Fighting Irish. The liaison then took the laptop out of their coaching box during a break in the first half. Weis was then approached by officials about the laptop, who then contacted his coaching staff to find out what was going on.

NCAA football rules bylaw 1-4-9a states, in part, that “motion pictures, any type of film, facsimile machines, videotapes, photographs, writing-transmission machines and computers may not be used by coaches or for coaching purposes anytime during the game or between periods.”

The Associated Press reports :

“The first thought you have is, `Are they tracking tendencies or other data,’” Lewandowski said. “You cannot use that type of resource in the coaching box. That’s just like you can’t have a replay monitor.” Weis said he told the officials that he wasn’t trying to do something improper while walking off the field at halftime. “The last thing I ever want to do is lie,” he said.

Lewandowski said there was no question the laptop inside the Notre Dame box was on and being used. The World of Isaac points out previous incidents of lying and cheating on the part of Weis, and throws out this gem, “I fully expect to see Matt Walsh trolling the sidelines at the next ND home game,” a reference to the now infamous Spygate scandal for which Charlie Weis was a participant.

I’d love to say they BEAT Michigan State, but that wasn’t the case. I can’t believe they are being accused of cheating in a game that they didn’t even win. There is a simple explanation that has been given for what happened in this instance. There was an intern with a laptop in the coaching box. He didn’t realize it was against the rules, and once he was informed, it was no longer in use. There was no intent to use the technology improperly and no advantage was gained. This is a non-issue and everyone should move on.

The fact that they lost makes this entire situation even more humorous. The team cheats and they still can’t get a win. Charlie Weis has a history of lying and cheating, as mentioned in the article. I don’t think interns for a national program such as Notre Dame take a dump without being told to. If that kid brought a laptop into the box and was using it during the game, then someone on the coaching staff told him to. Anything the coaching staff does directly reflects on the head coach. Just ask Bill Belichik how he feels about paying a $500,000 fine for Spygate. He didn’t hold the camera, but he is responsible. Just like Charlie Weis is responsible for the cheating that took place under his watch against Michigan State.

How could a laptop help you cheat during a game? I see all this finger-pointing, but no one can tell me how? Definitely not a ND fan, but a realistic fan of NCAAF. Doesn’t the coach have notebooks and such that are legal, so wouldn’t you be able to have the same info in a notebook (pen and paper)? It’s very similar to the New England Patriots Spygate scandal - much ado about nothing. Now, Weis will be linked to this, although there is probably nothing to it.

It was an honest mistake. You guys are coming down too hard on Charlie Weis. He is a good coach, and a good man. He is not a cheater.

Did Brian just compare a laptop with a pen and paper? The fact is that no one else in the NCAA would or have made this mistake, especially since Spygate. Notre Dame’s coaching staff should have known better. Criminal’s being prosecuted in our legal system don’t get off by stating they didn’t know the law.

Charlie’s colors are shining vividly!! He was the best OC while at NE. Who wouldn’t be when he knew what the defensive call would be before the play. Go back and look at the tapes of the Patriot’s games when Weiss was there and he seemed to have a knack to call the EXACT right play for the exact time against the exact defense. AMAZING!!!! He’s trying anything now that his butt is on the line. I know he’s been through hell personally with his health and everything but he’s going to go thru hell again with ND continuing to lose games. ND, sell short and get rid of this guy while you can. He is both a cheater and a loser.

Easy easy guys, I am a ND fan. Although I do think Charlie may be near the end of his tenure here at ND (possibly 1 more year after this one) I don’t think he is a cheater. I think ND will take a look at this situation internally and do their own investigation. The last thing ND wants is to be accussed of cheating. I do truely believe that if something is found they will publically admit it and Charlie will get into trouble. ND has nothing to hide. They are one of the best universities in the country academically and athletically and would never attempt to cheat. They hold themselves to a higher standard than almost any other college and thats why it is so difficult to stay as a coach.

lol crickets. Way to kill the conversation Andre. I assume you were referring to Ty Willingham, and on that point, I don’t think anyone can tell you why Charlie Weis still has a job.

The INTERN had the PC. The INTERN did NOT Cheat. He was merely ordering a couple pizzas for Charlie to snack on during halftime.
