Ken Shamrock

March 12th, 2009 filed in Fighting

Veteran fighter Ken Shamrock tested positive for steroids following his first-round victory over Ross Clifton on Feb. 13th in Fresno, California. The California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday suspended Shamrock for one year. Shamrock also faces a $2,500 fine. He tested positive for Norandrosterone, Stanozolol, and Noretiocholanolone. Shamrock was next scheduled to face off against former professional wrestler Bobby Lashley in the MMA main event on March 21 in Florida.

According to Fox Sports:

He failed a drug test taken prior to his Feb. 13 victory over Ross Clifton in Fresno, Calif. Shamrock is now suspended from all mixed martial arts competition nationwide through Feb. 1, 2010. Shamrock, 45, will have the chance to appeal his failed test with the California commission.

“Ken was taking legal over-the-counter products, and based upon our preliminary research, I’m investigating if those products were the result of these findings,” said Rod Donohoo, Shamrock’s attorney. “Ken is willing to submit to immediate testing in Sacramento to prove his innocence.”

Ken Shamrock CHEATed with Steroids
Chester Cheater

SHOCKING! Fighters use Steroids? You must be kidding me. The next think you’ll be telling me is that weight lifters use steroids too. Of course Ken Shamrock cheated, along with all of his other competitors in the MMA. He is just apparently one of the only ones stupid enough to get caught.

Ken Shamrock BEAT his competition
Billy Beater

All the facts are not in for this case. I feel comfortable in saying that Ken Shamrock will be vindicated upon appeal. He is a Hall of Fame fighter, one of the pioneers of MMA, and he should be treated with more respect than this. I believe Ken when he says that he only took over-the-counter products, and that he did not knowingly use an illegal substance. Ken Shamrock did not cheat.

So what do you think? Did Ken Shamrock CHEAT, or BEAT?

As a sport still in its infancy, MMA is still growing and learning the hard lessons that follow such rapid popularity. They need money and fame, so the guys in charge are not going to strictly follow the rules set by the athletic commissions, especially if it concerns a cash cow fighter. You look at fighters like Shamrock, Baroni, and Coleman, and it’s obvious they’re on something. They’re not just freakish looking, but they’re mentally unstable. Next thing you know, Brock Lesnar will test positive….big surprise? Nope.

I wonder if shamrock will go back to pro-wrestling since shamrock is familiar with that scene and might need the work in this economy, plus he’ll have a buddy in Vince to stack with.

ken’s adoptive brother frank shamrock has said ken uses steroids his whole life…years ago, and simply stops before fights in order to pass the test. my guess…he will pass follow up tests because the substances were out of his system by then. he just slipped up this one time. not bad considering a 40 fight career. and Lee- the accusation against lesnar is completely unfounded. simply being a big guy does not mean you use steroids.

Ken and frank SHAMrock both suffer from 1/2 inch weenie syndrome due to HEAVY steroid use.

I will kick BOTH their sorry asses at the same time with my eyes closed.

All you have to do is look at Ken Shamrock and it’s obvious he’s been a steroid monkey for many years.

A lot of fighters are probably doing roids as well, unknown to us, it’s just that they don’t get caught because they probably just roid up during training to improve their performance, then clean it out before the fight or drug test (probably a couple of weeks before). Also, nearly every fighter who may have come from pro wrestling (like Ken, he was actually a Japanese pro wrestler before he became an MMA fighter, then during the late 90s, Shamrock went to WWF), since roids are pretty much something that is required for nearly all wrestlers in order for them to look impressive (I mean look at Ken Shamrock’s physique during WWF!)

Anyway, even if it may sound like an excuse, some fighters may have tested positive because they didn’t know the supplements they use has roids on them, but still, it is also their personal irresponsibility on now knowing what they’re taking.

Not that roids would help that much. Stamina would go down faster as steroid users has blood pumping faster to their muscles, and they would only be faster and stronger for a short while (unless they really roided up to the max), but if they weren’t able to finish quick, they’re going to be hella tired. Not to mention its side effects in the long run.

Oh and btw, you should all do a piece on Josh Barnett, as he tested positive for steroids for the third time now (one was back then when he became the UFC Heavyweight champion, I forgot when the second one was but the third and last time was when he was about to fight Fedor Emelianenko in Affliction a few months ago), and due to that, it pretty much destroyed Affliction’s main card and Affliction as a whole, and they ended up being just a clothing line again, instead of an MMA organization.
