Jose Canseco, poster-boy for steroid use in Baseball, was detained for nearly 10 hours by immigration officials as he tried to enter the United States with a controlled fertility drug in his vehicle. Canseco has published two books, Juiced and Vindicated, in which he named names, and exposed the drug culture in Major League Baseball.

In 2005, Canseco admitted to using anabolic steroids in his tell-all book and claimed that up to 85% of major league players took steroids, a figure disputed by many in the game. Most of the players named in the book denied the steroid use, however, with the release of the Mitchel Report, it seems Canseco may have been right.

The Associated Press has more details on the most recent incident :

Canceco was detained at San Diego’s San Ysidro border crossing Thursday after agents searched his vehicle and said they found human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which is illegal without a prescription.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released Canseco after he agreed to allow ICE agents to search his Los Angeles-area home. About 10 ICE agents searched the home in his attorney’s presence Friday as Canseco was returning from San Diego. “They found nothing. They took nothing,” the Attorney, Emerson, said.

HCG is a ‘fertility drug’ in females however it can be used as gonadal support in males who use anabolic steroids. An anabolic steroid - like Winstrol - will reduce male output of testosterone thus shrinking the testicular size and even causing infertility. HCG is used to increase natural testosterone until the normal physiology catches up with T production.

So, long story short : Canseco is still using steroids, possibly in training for his boxing career, and in order to prevent his balls from shrinking, he took a trip down to Mexico to buy a controlled substance and was caught on the way back. The life of Jose Canseco is never boring. It seems the Feds are preventing Canseco from self medicating. Ron Paul would not be pleased.
