Horse Doping

September 17th, 2008 filed in Animals

Horse Doping has become the latest form of cheating in sports to have the curtain whisked away. First there were the tragedies of Barbaro and Eight Belles, both allegedly steroids related. Then came the scandal of Big Brown, his trainer Rick Dutrow and Steroids. Now finally, two of the three Triple Crown states, Kentucky and Maryland, have taken a stand on this issue. Both states have banned steroids at the track in September of 2008. However, some believe that the penalties will not be stiff enough to have the intended effect.

Those bans come on the heels of the recent controversy at the Olympic Games, in which six horses were expelled from the show jumping final for doping. Apparently horse doping in the Olympics is not a new problem, as a similar scandal shook the Athens games just four years ago. Have we reached a point where horses are more doped than Baseball players?

Are horses more doped than baseball players? Depends on definition.

Horse doping is perfectly legal in some states, although these states are dwindling in number.

Even though you will read otherwise, doping in the MLB was almost always illegal.

In our view doping in horse racing may almost be worse because the horse is relying on the owner/trainer for it’s welfare. It is not able to give consent.

Doping of children and doping of animals carries a particularly hideous taint.

eight belles did not have any steroids in her body!!please if you want to make the case be correct!!i never heard so much as a whisper about barbaro having them either!!big brown YES..no horse should be juiced up but these two that you named were drug free..
larry jones never uses steroids and has gotten a lot of grief for being one of the few honest trainers..same goes for matz..dutrow totally different story..
hopefully all the states will be drug free soon..given the attention given over the eight belles tradgedy..she did indeed give her life for something!!accidents do happen but please get your facts right
