Darryl Blackstock

October 8th, 2008 filed in Football

Darryl Blackstock, linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals, has been suspended four games for violating the National Football League’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Blackstock, in his 4th season out of Virginia Tech, played in all five of the Bengal’s losses this season. He will be eligible to return for the November 16th game versus Philadelphia.

From NFL.com :

“I’ve apologized to my coaches and teammates for an unfortunate mistake,” Blackstock said. “I did not intentionally violate the policy, but I know it’s my responsibility to use only approved nutritional supplements, and I didn’t realize I was taking an over-the-counter product that included a banned substance. I also want to apologize to our fans, and I’ll do everything I can to be ready to come back strong next month.”

His statement is very similar to that of Jamar Nesbit, who was suspended last month for a similar offense.

I really wish they would publish the names of the products that these athletes are using. It sure would help the public to decide if the athlete was guilty of “intent” or not. Both Jamar Nesbit and Blackstock have stated they took over-the-counter products that they didn’t realize contained banned substances. I think there is a difference between taking over-the-counter “super bulking hydro ripped fuel stimulant powder” and “flintstones vitamins”. Without knowing what these athletes took, it is difficult to know how serious the offense was.
